Support groups offer information about a disease or condition and its symptoms and treatment. They help you connect with people facing similar issues and illnesses. Talking to others in a similar situation offers you the opportunity to share experiences and advice and learn more about what you are facing. If you have thoughts or feelings that you are reluctant to share with family and friends, you may find others in the support group who share them and can talk about them with you.
Some people assume that support groups are like group therapy, which is far from the truth. Support groups often host speakers, such as doctors and nurses, who share current treatment and research information about your illness or condition. Support groups can be a valuable resource in helping you cope. You can get practical advice or information about treatment options, learn more about resources available to you and help you gain a sense of empowerment. And who knows? You may make some friends while you're there!
