Cabell Huntington Hospital's monthly Parkinson's disease Support Group will meet on Tuesday, August 16, for family members, caregivers and anyone affected by Parkinson's disease.
The meeting is free and open to the public, and will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Education Resource Room of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Facilitators Joy Pelfrey, Director of Senior Services, and Teresa Sexton, Senior Services Clinical Manager, will lead a discussion to help people understand how they can help friends or loved ones cope with depression while living with Parkinson's Disease.
"Depression is a common challenge for people living with Parkinson's disease," Pelfrey said. "Approximately 40 percent of those diagnosed will experience depression at some point. It is important to recognize the symptoms early because depression is treatable. It is also important to spend time with others who have experienced the disease process and to learn from them what has worked. A support group can be very beneficial in improving the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s disease."
