Surgical Weight Control

There are people in our community who have to ask for help when tying their shoes. They don't fit comfortably in the seats at the movie theater or on an airplane, and the simple act of walking can make their joints stiff and sore. They are the obese, and the number of obese people is growing in West Virginia.

According to surgeon general, 61 percent of America's adults are overweight and 300,000 U.S. deaths a year are associated with obesity. Those who are obese have a higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, digestive diseases, orthopedic disorders and an increased risk of death from some cancers. West Virginia ranks high among the states with the greatest number of people per capita suffering from these conditions.
