Rehabilitation Services

Cabell Huntington Hospital helps patients recover from illness or injury through its Rehabilitation Services Department. Therapy during your hospital stay and after returning home can be vital to resuming an active lifestyle.

The Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation units use a variety of tools and techniques such as exercise, gait training, pain management, training in the activities of daily living and speech/language training to help you regain your strength and functioning.

Physical Therapy

With a physician's referral, you will be evaluated and an individual treatment program will be developed for your specific problems and needs. The department provides inpatient and outpatient programs and establishes home programs. Our outpatient Physical Therapy staff includes certified orthopedic therapists, and specialists in:

• sports medicine
• aquatic therapy
• pediatric physical therapy, and
• the Herdman Vestibular Balance System. Herdman-certified vestibular therapists use body positioning exercises and balance retraining to help patients that suffer from vertigo, dizziness, balance problems and similar conditions without invasive procedures.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of articulation, language, voice, fluency, feeding and swallowing disorders. Speech therapy works with patients from infants to the elderly. Our outpatient Speech Therapy staff includes:

• Specialists in pediatric speech therapy
• A certified Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT®) therapist
• Specialists in Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) for assessment of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
• Specialists in dysphagia therapy, including VitalStim, which is electrical stimulation of the swallowing muscles
• Specialists in performing and interpreting modified barium swallowing (MBS) evaluations

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is skilled treatment that helps you achieve or improve your independent living skills after illness or injury or in coping with a chronic condition. Our outpatient Occupational Therapy staff includes specialists in functional capacity evaluations, hand and upper extremity injuries, pediatric occupational therapy, lymphedema therapy and and the Herdman Vestibular Balance System. Services include:

• Individualized treatment programs to improve your ability to perform daily activities
• Performance skills assessments and treatment
• Adaptive equipment recommendations and training
• Guidance to family members and caregivers

Facilities

Each client's plan of treatment is developed individually. Rehabilitation services are offered in the SMART Center, the Balance Center, the YMCA and/or the Rehabilitation Department on the Fourth Floor of the hospital. The location of your therapy will be determined by your plan of care. Every effort is made to coordinate appointments for your convenience.
