Smart Knee Implant

What is the Smart Knee Implant?

Persona IQ's® offers the world's first and only smart knee implant granted De Novo status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for total knee replacement surgery, which means it is the only medical device of its kind.

We know the size, shape, and fit of your knee implants can make a big difference in your satisfaction after total knee replacement. That’s why the Persona Knee was designed to give your surgeon more options to better match your bone’s anatomy. We are proud to introduce the first and only smart knee implant in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Through the latest implant technology, you’ll have confidence that you’re connected to your healthcare team, every step of the way.

How does the Smart Knee Implant Work?

With implantable sensor technology that measures range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics, Persona IQ  records and wirelessly transmits a wide range of gait data from the knee implant to a patient’s personal base station at home. The data is then securely delivered to a HIPAA compliant cloud-based platform and can be accessed by the patient and their surgeon. Persona IQ will work together with mymobility®, a remote care management platform that tracks pre- and post-operative mobility metrics.

Why Collect Data?

The information collected by Persona IQ allows your physician to remotely view your knee data throughout your recovery. Through the latest implant technology, you’ll have confidence that you’re connected to your healthcare team, every step of the way. Persona IQ fits seamlessly into your life. You’ll simply set it up one time, following instructions. Personal IQ does NOT collect data on your location.

What are the Benefits of Persona IQ?

The Persona IQ smart knee collects kinematic data from patients as they’re going about everyday life.

  • Supports the goal of 100% patient compliance
  • Provides remote, passively collected data through an intuitive user interface
  • Maintains standard Persona Knee surgery workflow and instrumentation.

*Indications

The Canary Tibial Extension (CTE) with Canary Health Implanted Reporting Processor (CHIRP) System is intended to provide objective kinematic data from the implanted medical device during a patient’s total knee arthroplasty (TKA) post-surgical care. The kinematic data are an adjunct to other physiological parameter measurement tools applied or utilized by the physician during the course of patient monitoring and treatment post-surgery. The device is indicated for use in patients undergoing a cemented TKA procedure that are normally indicated for at least a 58 mm sized tibial stem extension. The objective kinematic data generated by the CTE with CHIRP System are not intended to support clinical decision-making and have not been shown to provide any clinical benefit. The CTE with CHIRP System is compatible with Zimmer Persona® Personalized Knee System.

Contraindications

The canturio™ te (CTE) is contraindicated for use in patients who are undergoing procedures or treatments at or in the proximity of the CTE using therapeutic ionizing radiation can result in shortened battery life or premature failure of electronic components. Damage to the CTE by therapeutic ionizing radiation may not be immediately detectable. Before performing TKA on any patient, consider the following contraindications. The Zimmer Biomet Persona® Knee System is contraindicated for use in patients who have:

  • Previous history of infection in the affected joint and/or other local/systemic infection that may affect the prosthetic jointInsufficient bone stock on femoral or tibial surfaces
  • Skeletal immaturity
  • Neuropathic arthropathy
  • Osteoporosis or any loss of musculature or neuromuscular disease that compromises the affected limb
  • A stable, painless arthrodesis in a satisfactory functional position
  • Severe instability secondary to the absence of collateral ligament integrity

Total Knee Arthroplasty is contraindicated in patients who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) accompanied by an ulcer of the skin or a history of recurrent breakdown of the skin because their risk of postoperative infection is greater. RA patients using steroids may also have increased risk of infection. Late infections in RA patients have been reported 24+ months postoperative.

Results are not necessarily typical and will vary due to health, weight, activity and other human variables. Not all patients are candidates for this product and/or procedure. Only a medical professional can determine the treatment appropriate for your specific condition. Talk to your surgeon about whether knee replacement is right for you and the risks of the procedure, including the risk of implant wear, infection, loosening, breakage or failure, any of which could require additional surgery. Patients must have a compatible smartphone to utilize mymobility. Not all patients are candidates for mymobility and patients should be evaluated by surgeons as appropriate candidates for therapy at home.
