Approach strengthens safety, recovery and patient experience

Marshall Health Network (MHN) has transitioned to fully private patient rooms across its four hospitals, establishing a new systemwide standard for inpatient care focused on safety, quality and the patient experience.

Patients admitted to acute inpatient rooms at Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Hoops Family Children’s Hospital in Huntington and Rivers Health in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, are now cared for in private rooms.

“Providing private rooms across our hospitals reflects Marshall Health Network’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care,” said Scott Raynes, president and CEO of MHN. “Likewise, we’ve aligned staffing, patient flow and care coordination to maintain bed availability and ensure patients continue to receive timely care when they need it.”

“Patient experience and quality of care are enhanced with the utilization of private rooms,” said Andy Mullins, DNP, APRN, chief nursing officer for MHN. “Private rooms promote dignity, confidentiality and holistic care that includes family engagement in patient care and outcomes.”

Private rooms reduce infection risk, promote rest and healing and allow for more direct communication between patients and care teams, while providing privacy for sensitive conversations and space for family involvement. This model also supports consistent monitoring and better enables care teams to tailor treatment, coordinate multidisciplinary care and focus more fully on individual patient needs—ultimately supporting safer, more effective care delivery.

Marshall Health Network continues to invest in facilities, technology and care models that improve access, quality and outcomes across the region.
