The American Heart Association presents the Get With The Guidelines® awards for proven dedication to best practices and life-saving care

Marshall Health Network-St. Mary’s Medical Center (SMMC) and Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) have again received a number of American Heart Association Get With the Guidelines® achievement awards for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of heart disease and stroke, as well as resuscitation care, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times, and fewer readmissions to the hospital.

SMMC, home of the MHN Cardiovascular Center of Excellence, received the following achievement awards this year:

Stroke Care

Get With the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus (15th consecutive year)
Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus and Advanced Therapy
Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Heart Failure Care

Get With the Guidelines – Heart Failure Gold Plus (12th consecutive year)
Target: Heart Failure Optimal

Resuscitation Care

SMMC also received the American Heart Association Commitment to Quality award. This is the first year for this special award level - recognizing an elite group of hospitals having reached achievement level in 3 or more Get With The Guidelines modules. Only 158 sites in the nation met the criteria for this award.

This year, CHH received the following achievement awards:

Stroke Care

Get With the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus (10th consecutive year)
Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll (6th consecutive year)

Resuscitation Care

Get With the Guidelines – Resuscitation Gold Pediatric
Get With the Guidelines - Resuscitation Silver Adult
Get With the Guidelines – Resuscitation Bronze Neonate/Infant
Get With the Guidelines - Resuscitation Target Survival

The new Target Survival Award indicates that CHH is in the top 40% for in-hospital cardiac arrest survival.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines. As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, SMMC and CHH qualified for the awards by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care. Get With The Guidelines - Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

“Marshall Health Network is dedicated to delivering highly reliable care to patients by implementing the most advanced treatment protocols to achieve optimal outcomes,” said Hoyt Burdick, MD, chief medical officer, MHN. “We appreciate the American Heart Association’s recognition of our care teams’ outstanding performance with these prestigious awards.”

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke or heart attack and heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.
